Community involvement

At Capita LGS the nature of our business places us at the heart of the communities in which we operate. We endeavour to make a positive impact on these communities through the improvement and flexibility of the services we deliver, creation of new jobs, regeneration projects and through our community involvement activities.

We are committed to maximising the benefits of working in partnerships and believe that by engaging with local stakeholders and donating time and money we can be an asset to local communities.

We also encourage our employees to engage with their local communities – either in their personal capacity or through the Capita Group volunteering scheme which is run through Business in the Community. Bexley Community Sponsorship Initiatives

Capita LGS has worked in partnership with Bexley Council since 1994 and in 2006 when we competitively won the contract to continue working with Bexley, we agreed that as part of this ongoing relationship we would invest heavily in community projects to bolster the Council's youth strategy. Over the last four years we have provided over £138,500 in sponsorship funds, supporting a number of initiatives including learning and mentoring programmes, sports projects and awards for work experience.

We currently sponsor the following Bexley community initiatives:

  • The Thamesmead Youth Awareness Programme

    details

The Thamesmead Youth Awareness Programme (TYAP) Support Service, working in North Bexley, engages with marginalised groups of young people aged between eight and 25 years of age who are at risk of becoming involved in crime or becoming the victims of crime, helping them to improve their overall quality of life.

Capita LGS was keen to get involved in sponsoring this initiative and when we came on board with this programme in April 2008 we provided TYAP with £10,000 in funding which proved instrumental in enabling the Programme to continue providing its valued service in the Bexley area. One particular project through which we were able to make a significant difference was a drop-in centre for young people that was facing closure due to a lack of funding. Through the help of Capita LGS and The Jack Petchey Foundation the drop-in centre was saved and its doors are still open today. However it wasn’t long until the drop-in centre came under threat of closure again – due to the recession the Jack Petchy Foundation was unable to continue funding the programme in 2009, so Capita LGS agreed to provide further funding of £22,250 which will keep the drop-in centre open until 31 March 2010.
  • Community Sports and Physical Activity Projects

    details

This initiative is aimed at providing greater sports activity opportunities for Bexley’s youth by recruiting additional trained coaches within the local community, providing better training opportunities for physical education staff and providing a career structure for coaches through part-time contracts. We have been involved in this area of sponsorship since April 2006 and over the last four years have provided over £55,000 in sponsorship funding. Some notable achievements that we have enabled in this area include the employment of four part-time coaches (benefiting over 700 children) and initiating a strong support base for Bexley’s Community Sport and Physical Activity Network which works at creating opportunities for every young person in Bexley to participate in more sport and physical activities.
